Chongjin is the capital of Hamgyeong Bukdo Province of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It is the third largest city and an important industrial city in northern North Korea. It is located in the south of Hamgyeong Bukdo Province, near the Sea of Japan with an area of 269 square kilometers and a population of about 700,000. The city is divided into 20 districts. It is the only city in North Korea that has trams besides Pyongyang. However, due to power shortage, trams are often shut down. Chongjin is the only city in North Korea with foreign consulates. The Chinese Consulate is located in Cheon Ma San Hotel in Shin'am-dong of the city.

[Resources and Industries]
Chongjin is one of the important steel and fiber manufacturing bases in North Korea. The ferrous metal industry in North Korean is concentrated here. There are large enterprises such as steel plants and shipyards in the city.
Chongjin Port is one of the largest ports in North Korea, with more than 30 berths with over 10 thousand tons capacity, the routes of which mainly lead to Maizuru Port and Niigata Port in Kyoto, Japan.
The railways of Chongjin are connected to the railway system in northern China, and they can also be connected to the wide-rail railway in Russia via Rason. It is connected to Kimchaek, Hamsung, and Pyongyang on the south.
Chongjin Airport is under the administration of the Korean People's Army. It is generally used as a military base and is also open to passenger and cargo transportation in civil aviation.
