• Han to Sui–Tang dynasties: Region under the rule of the Fuyu Kingdom and Balhae Kingdom.

• 1800: Qing government established Changchun Prefecture, marking the beginning of the city.

• 1889: Upgraded to Changchun Fu.

• 1913: Renamed Changchun County.

• 1932: Renamed Xinjing Special City during the puppet Manchukuo period.

• 1948: Became Changchun Special City.

• 1949: Officially renamed Changchun City.

• 1953: Designated as a centrally administered municipality.

• 1954: Became the capital of Jilin Province.

• 1979: Ranked among the 15 national economic center cities.

• 1989: Approved as a state-planned city.
