Two sources of excitement, including an international science and education project invested with RMB30.8 billion by Foshan Weizhichuang Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Sovereign Group; and a think-tank team led by Prof. Wang Gang, Professor of Sun Yat-Sen University and Founder of Foshan Weizhichuang Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd., arrived in one day at the China (Changchun)-ROK International Cooperation Demonstration Zone on November 15, 2020.  

Insiders say the three parties will join hands to build an international complex integrating commerce, culture, sport, medical tourism, eco-friendly residence and kindergarten-high school education. For the first phase of the project, RMB400 million will be invested on the construction of Northeast Asia International Research Institute of Optoelectronic Technology.  

The institute is said to focus on optoelectronic semiconductor materials and equipment manufacturing, integrating basic application research and top-end application research and development, transformation of scientific findings, industrial cultivation and specialist training, which is expected to accelerate the industrialization of independent optoelectronic semiconductor materials, chips and equipment of China. With big projects, strong teams and large platforms as carriers, the institute will spare no effort to build an emerging industrial cluster for optoelectronic semiconductor materials. In the meantime, based on the research results of Prof. Wang’s team, integrated chip optoelectronic semiconductor, intelligent manufacturing equipment, innovative application of photoelectric materials and devices will be incubated so as to drive the practical application of optoelectronic semiconductor materials, promote the intelligent transformation of optoelectronic enterprises, create international famous brands, and build intelligent manufacturing clusters for optoelectronic semiconductors with international competitiveness, thereby becoming a technological landmark for technological innovation in Changchun City. 

“I used to study at Jilin University, and now I have returned home for this big project,” said Prof. Wang Gang, adding, “After the research institute gets settled, I will work with my team to create the optoelectronic intelligent manufacturing of the city into an industry at RMB100 billion level within about 10 years, and help a number of enterprises get listed on the science and technology innovation board.” 

“Our policy advantages are becoming increasingly prominent, and the investment driven effects are getting much better,” said the leader of the demonstration zone, adding, “We will then do our best for the settlement of enterprises and projects, with priority given to top-end fields, high-caliber talents, top-notch technologies and high-caliber talents in such aspects as health food, intelligent manufacturing, biotechnology, optoelectronic, IT, and modern service industry and the construction of 100 key laboratories or R & D centers during the 14th Five-Year Plan.”
