"This road will effectively ease traffic pressure in the main urban area by keeping transit vehicles from passing through the city center," said Wu Weiju, the project leader from Changchun Yusheng High-Grade Highway Engineering Co., Ltd. He pointed to the roaring machinery in the distance at the project construction site southwest of Fanjiatun Town, Gongzhuling City, on the afternoon of March 15. Just ten days ago, this site was open land; now, the pounding of pile drivers echoes across the fields.

As a key provincial transportation development project and a major initiative serving the Changchun modern metropolitan area, construction on the western section of Changchun's "Half-Hour Ring Road" the National Highway Beijing-Fushun Line (G102) Changchun Bypass has been advancing rapidly since it began on March 5. Wu Weiju stated that over 120 pieces of equipment have been deployed on site since construction started. Topsoil stripping has been completed for approximately 15 kilometers at the initial construction points, and pile foundation work has begun simultaneously at multiple bridge locations.

The main line of the project spans 85.603 kilometers. It starts southwest of Fanjiatun Town, Gongzhuling City, connecting to the existing National Highway Beijing-Fushun Line via the Fengxiang Interchange. It ends northeast of Dong'erdaogou, reconnecting to the Beijing-Fushun Line at the Mishazi North Interchange. The route crosses the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway, the Changchun-Baicheng Railway, the Yitong River, and the Beijing-Harbin Expressway.

The project is being built to the standards of a dual six-lane, first-class highway, with a design speed of 80 km/h and a subgrade width of 33 meters. The entire route will include 4 large bridges, 6 medium bridges, 4 small bridges, and 122 culverts. It will also feature 7 interchange hubs, 9 overpasses/separation structures, 3 underpasses, and 115 at-grade intersections. Supporting facilities will include 1 parking area, 1 maintenance depot, 1 ramp toll station, and 6 bus stops.

"Upon completion, the project will connect Changchun's main urban area, Gongzhuling City, and Nong'an County, while radiating out to Dehui City and the China-Korea (Changchun) International Cooperation Demonstration Zone. It will open up new industrial corridors, drive a comprehensive upgrade of logistics and tourism along the route, and inject strong momentum into the high-quality development of the Changchun modern metropolitan area," Wu Weiju said. Transit vehicles will be able to bypass the city using this western ring road, significantly relieving traffic pressure on urban arteries like the South Fourth Ring Road, Dongrong Avenue, and Yuanda Avenue.

Thanks to the overall coordination and promotion by the Changchun Municipal Committee and Government, as well as strong support from the Jilin Provincial Department of Transportation, the preliminary work progressed smoothly. Feasibility studies, construction drawing approvals, and the tendering process were completed in 2025, and the construction permit was obtained in February 2026. Currently, all project personnel are mobilized on site, with land acquisition, demolition, and physical construction proceeding concurrently. According to the plan, the project is scheduled for completion and opening to traffic in 2029.

By then, Changchun's "Half-Hour Ring Road" will form a closed loop, the transportation framework of Changchun's modern metropolitan area will become more robust, providing important transportation support for the coordinated development of central and western Jilin and the comprehensive revitalization of Northeast China.
