Changchun is a nationally renowned science and education hub. In 2024, the city was selected as one of the first national pilot zones for integrated ‘vehicle-road-cloud’ intelligent connected systems. It has successfully hosted the first Changchun International Optoelectronic Expo and the International Medicine and Health Industry Expo.
With strong scientific research foundations and abundant resources, Changchun is home to 83 research institutions, represented by the ‘One Academy and Three Institutes’ of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Changchun—Changchun Branch, the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, and the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology. These institutions serve as vital innovation sources for Jilin Province and all of Northeast China, achieving multiple pioneering breakthroughs in China’s scientific history.
In recent years, Changchun continues to unleash its innovation potential, with new technologies and products emerging rapidly. Highlights include:
  • The Jilin-1 satellite constellation has reached 117 satellites in orbit, solidifying its position as the world’s largest commercial remote sensing constellation.
  • The world’s first small-pitch ‘LED Integrated Three-in-One’ technology, developed by Changchun Cedar Electronics Technology Co., tops the global market.
  • Ultra-precision aspheric milling and multi-degree-of-freedom rapid polishing equipment developed by Changchun UP Optotech CO.,LTD breaks bottlenecks in manufacturing large-aperture optical components.
  • Changchun Chang Guang Bo Xiang UAV developed the world’s first ‘dual-wing vertical take-off and landing fixed-wing UAV,’ leading global advancements.
  • CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd manufactured rail equipment showcased at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
  • Changchun BCHT Biotechnology Co. launched China’s first domestic live-attenuated shingles vaccine, putting an end to foreign monopoly.
  • A laser-illumination green-transparent ceramic, developed by the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, filled an international research gap.
  • The Changchun Institute of Biological Products leads globally in influenza split-virus vaccine production and quality.
  • Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. is the first ‘unicorn enterprise’ in Northeast China, setting a world record for ultra-lightwide swath sub-meter remote sensing satellites.
The Beihu Future Science City New Quality Productive Forces Promotion Center is now operational, with more than 130 science and technology projects progressing. The region hosts 11 national key laboratories and supports major provincial laboratory clusters including Changbai Mountain, Sanjiang, and Jiguang.
