Huanglong Opera

As one of China's national intangible cultural heritage items, Huanglong Opera is a traditional local opera form originating from Nong'an County in Changchun. It emerged around the late 19th century. As Nong'an County was historically the seat of Huanglong Prefecture during the Liao and Jin Dynasties, the genre was officially named "Huanglong Opera" in 1959. Huanglong Opera is built upon the music of "Cidiying" (a colloquial local term used by folk performers to refer to the region's shadow puppetry), and integrates a wide range of musical elements such as Northeast China folk tunes, traditional opera melodies, shadow-puppet-specialized tunes, shamanic chanting styles, and deity tunes, forming a distinct opera genre. Its vocal and musical style is known for being high-pitched, bold, rustic, vivid, and delicate all at once. On June 7, 2008, Huanglong Opera was included by the State Council of the People's Republic of China in the second batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
