The Cow
The film, Cow, literally “Fighting for Cow” is a black comedy which takes its story from oral traditions of Shandong. A villager called Niu’er is charged with caring for a cow, considered an object of awe to the village given its larger size and ability to produce large amounts of milk. When the village is bombed by the Japanese, Niu’er flees from his home, only to return to devastation and a mass grave. The cow, however, has survived, and the two make their way across the landscape, avoiding Japanese troops and hungry survivors before eventually meeting with the 8th Route Army.
The Xinhai Revolution
During late 19th to early 20th century, protests and armed uprisings took place across the nation against the monarchy of the Qing Dynasty. The story closely follows key events of the Xinhai Revolution (The year 1911 is called Xinhai in the Chinese way of numbering years, so the revolution is named Xinhai Revolution), with focus on Huang Xing and Sun Yat-sen, beginning with the Wuchang Uprising of 1911, from the Second Guangzhou Uprising (April 27, 1911) through military engagements between revolutionary and Qing Dynasty forces, the deaths of the 72 martyrs, and scenes of the new Provisional Republic of China, followed by news of the abdication of the last emperor called Puyi of Qing Dynasty. In addition to Huang and Sun, other figures including Li Yuanhong, Dowager Longyu, Yuan Shikai, Wang Jingwei, Song Jiaoren and Qiu Jin appear one after another in the events, creating a wonderful part in the modern history of China.
