Core Tip     As information and industrialization enter a deeper level of combination, a newly upgraded service of the foreign language website of Changchun Foreign Affairs Office (CCFAO) and the People’s Government of Changchun City has been launched with the opening of the “Information Service Platform for the Enterprises of Changchun City” in five languages of English, Japanese, Russian, Korean and Chinese. The initiative, which cannot be made possible without the resources of the website, the information collected from competent enterprises in hopes of cooperating with foreign counterparts, the technical support of Changchun Information Center and the assistance of Changchun Municipal Federation of Industry and Commerce, is meant to improve the level of development of export-oriented economy of Changchun City, lead the local enterprises to create and improve their competitiveness in a period in human history characterized by the shift from traditional industry to an economy based on the manipulation of information, deepen cooperative relations with the local enterprises, and join hands with them to open an “Everlasting Exhibition of Enterprises of Changchun City” online, thereby setting up a bridge for the local export-oriented enterprises to take part in regional economic cooperation and reach out to global markets.

The FAW Group, “FAW China” or “FAW”, is a central enterprise and large state-owned automobile manufacturer. Headquartered in Changchun City, Jilin Province, FAW is formerly known as the First Automobile Works. Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the name of the factory. In 1953, FAW broke ground on its first factory and produced the first truck (Jie Fang) in 1956. In 1958, FAW produced China’s first passenger car (Dong Feng) and luxury sedan (Hong Qi). The founding of FAW opened a new chapter of the automobile industry of China. After 50 plus years of development, FAW has become the largest automobile enterprise group of China and thus appeared on the list of the Global 500. In 2010, FAW sold 2.558 million vehicles and made a total operating income of RMB292.7, ranking the 258th among the Global 500. By 2010, its brand value had reached RMB65.332 billion.

Structure Overview

FAW has 18 departments and 28 wholly owned subsidiaries, including four listed companies, namely, FAW Car Company Limited, Changchun FAW Faway Automobile Components Co., Ltd., Tianjing FAW Xiali Automobile Co., Ltd, and Qiming Information Technology Co., Ltd, which are mainly engaged in research and development, passenger cars, commercial vehicles, spare parts and derivatives. FAW has 132,000 employees and RMB172.5 billion assets.

Its factories, research academies and institutes can be found in 18 cities of 14 provinces, cities and autonomous regions, forming three production bases in Northeast China, North China (Jiaodong Peninsular) and Southwest China that are able to produce a wide range of products including vehicles, motors and spare parts.

 

The group, headquartered in the hinterland of Northeast China, Changchun City, Jilin Province, covers vehicle manufacturers including FAW Jiefang Automotive Co., FAW Car Co., Ltd., FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., FAW Bus Co., Ltd., Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. Changchun Fengyue, and product development and research units including FAW Technology Center, the No.9 Mechanical Industry Design homes and other product development and plant design research units. The Changchun-based companies include Changchun Faway Auto Parts Co., Ltd., FAW Foundry Co., Ltd., FAW Toyota (Changchun) Engine Co., Ltd., FAW and FAW Tooling Die Manufacturing Co., and FAW Import and Export Company, etc. The products made in Changchun include: medium, heavy and light-duty (Jie Fang) trucks; Hong Qi and Besturn sedans; VW’s Jetta, Bora, Golf, Sagitar, Magotan and CC sedans; Audi A4L, Q5 and A6L sedans; Mazda 6 sedans; Toyota Land Cruiser LC200 sport utility vehicles and Prius hybrid cars, etc.

 

Over the past 50 years, FAW has sold 6.4 million vehicles. In addition to consolidating and developing domestic market, FAW has put unremitting effort into exploring international market, with a global marketing and procurement system and five regional companies and 11 offices (including assembly plants) established in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America, North America. The number of exported vehicles has reached 32,000, generating USD520 million sales revenues and a total of over USD6 billion import and export trade volume.

Research and Development System

FAW has established a list of R&D institutions, with research and development carried out in such fields as vehicle, assembly, components and manufacturing technology. The FAW Technology Center is the group's core research and development institution. It is also China’s oldest and largest automotive product development and testing base that is engaged in independent research and development of commercial vehicles, passenger car assemblies and auto parts. It has set up branches in Tianjin, Qingdao and Wuxi.

 

Over the past years, FAW Technology Center has kept pace with the pulse of technological development of automotive products. Relying on its own competitive research, development, integration and production and marketing capabilities, FAW has been forging ahead towards automotive hi-techs and core technologies. On the basis of the existing 17 departments/institutes/centers, FAW is now working on opening overseas research and development centers in an effort to support self-owned brand overseas business strategy and make use of foreign advanced resources to compensate for its lack of domestic R&D capabilities. In addition, FAW has a casting mold technology center, an automotive electronic technology center and other research institutions.

 

The Technology Center of FAW Group, one of first state-level technology centers recognized by the State Economic and Trade Commission and other departments, integrates scientific research and product development, with large scale, strong core capabilities, advanced development tools, technical strength and other characteristics. As a product R&D testing base, it has now had independent R&D capacities of core technologies for commercial vehicles, passenger cars, light and micro cars, powertrain systems and automotive electronics.
